The Kentucky Baha'i School

The Kentucky Baha'i School offers a full program of adult, youth, and children’s classes from Saturday morning through Monday noon each Labor Day weekend. Many recreational activities are available in a relaxed and loving family-oriented atmosphere, with affordable cost and comfortable facilities in a beautiful wooded setting near Lake Cumberland in southern Kentucky. The lodge, which will only be hosting the school, has big porches with rocking chairs, providing a great place for relaxing, visiting, and singing.

An Invitation

To: All Friends Residing in Kentucky and the Neighboring States (and anywhere else!)

Dearest Friends
,

Plans are under way for our annual Kentucky Bahá’í School at Lake Cumberland 4-H Educational Center (formerly Kentucky Leadership Center). Please set aside the dates of September 4-7, 2009 (Labor Day weekend) in anticipation of this exciting event!

This year the adult sessions consist of workshops that encourage participation more than listening to speakers. Presenters include:

Steven FletcherMr. Steven Fletcher, a Baha'i author, storyteller, musician, and songwriter from California who has lived much of his life overseas, mostly in Africa. He will lead two workshops that will also include the youth:

-- "Creating Vessels of Meaning: Stories and the Five Year Plan"

Within the sequence of courses stories are used in many different ways. They are embedded in the Ruhi materials and they are explicitly called for in activities and service projects. Anna’s presentation is a well-known example.

We learn through stories in ways that we do not learn through other educational methods. This workshop will help participants gain an appreciation of stories and how they assist in communication and learning. It will teach skills that can be used both within Bahá’í Communities and in the world at large.

-- "A New Race of Men: Entry by Troops and the Five Year Plan"

The history of the Faith is full of uneducated and materially impoverished souls who were set aglow by the flame of faith and performed miraculous deeds in the path of God. What does God put into our hearts that “…can change a gnat into an eagle, a drop of water into rivers and seas, and an atom into lights and suns?”

Drawing upon the examples of Badi and Fred Mortensen (who was a convicted felon and a fugitive when he first met 'Abdu'l-Bahá), this workshop will explore themes including rank and station, purpose of the Bahá’í Faith, the nature of transformation, and the meaning of "a new race of men."

Additionally, the Kentuckiana (Louisville area) Cluster Area Teaching Committee will discuss Intensive Program of Growth activities and successes in their cluster.

Special activities include a coffee house, dance party, and our annual infamous talent show. Also planned are exciting children, junior youth, and youth class activities; book store; pontoon boat rides on Lake Cumberland; magnificent audio-visual productions by Tom Kimmerer; and morning yoga.

The session opens on Friday evening with registration and fellowship. Participants are encouraged to arrive as early as possible so as to settle in and be ready to begin with breakfast on Saturday morning. The school will end after lunch on Monday.

Come and bring your family, friends, and guests and enjoy spiritual fellowship in the great outdoors.
